Bert Ligon - Comprehensive Technique For Jazz Musicians, Second Edition

323 pages, Item number 1630038ED, $39.95

Despite the meaning of the word "improvisation," jazz musicians require a great deal of practice and preparation to successfully improvise. This book is ideal for teaching you methods and techniques to successfully improvise on your own.

This is not another scale or jazz patterns book. These exercises are based on the improvisations of great jazz artists. Musical ideas are extracted from these excerpts and developed into exercises designed to prepare you to play passages using the extracted idea. The ideas are developed using common compositional devices, thus training you in the art of composition and in the art of developing an idea. These skills, exercises and compositional techniques are then applied to etudes and put into useful musical settings.

This book will help accomplish the following objectives: 1) Playing the exercises will develop physical technique, muscle memory, and mental skills; 2) Having the exercises juxtaposed with musical examples expedites the connections and reinforces the practical function of the exercises; 3) Thinking through the development of the exercises, seeing from where the exercises were extracted and applying common compositional devices to the extracted ideas, will help you acquire the technique of composing "spontaneously."

Joy Of Improv - Completing The Foundation, Book Two - All Instruments
Joy Of Improv - Completing The Foundation, Book Two - Instruction Book For All Instruments
96 pages, Item number 1700548ED, $24.95

"Joy Of Improv - Completing The Foundation, Book Two" is a book of printed sheet music which contains "a course on improvisation for all instruments and all styles which will help you develop monster musical skills studying the lessons and playing along with the accompanying enhanced CD". That's quite a sentence (from the cover of the book!), but it is a good description of the books contents. Written by Dave Frank (with John Amaral), this volume gives lots of practical theory instruction, playing examples, and practical hints and pointers to help a musician get started in music improvisation. The CD (included with the book) contains lots of samples and examples. The demonstrations on the CD are played in the piano and also offer lots of tips and tricks by your instructor. This is a really thorough improvisation method, appropriate for any instrument, and we recommend it to our customers on a regular basis. (This book is book two of the series - it picks up where book one left off.)
