Chess Blues Classics

Blues in Chicago existed before Chess records, but Chicago blues was virtually created at Chess Records with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and other transplanted country blues musicians. Through the seemingly unlikely alliance of southern African Americans and two urban, immigrant Polish Jews, a brand new sound was sweated out on the South Side. The unadorned simplicity and primacy of Delta blues, combined with a big, vibrant jolt of electricity, turned the "song of the south" into an inner city anthem that would culturally unite the black community. The incredible energy and deep emotional expression inherent in the music eventually spread throughout the world, helping to foster the birth of rock 'n' roll along the way.

"Chess Blues Classics, The 50th Anniversary Collection" proudly presents the cream of Volumes I (1947 to 1956) and II (1957 to 1967) from the Chess reissue CDs. In addition, "Sugar Sweet" by Muddy Waters, from the "Fathers and Sons" album, appears as a special bonus selection. Accompanying the 20 transcriptions is an in-depth, 4-page history of the Chess blues. Included in the transcriptions are piano, voice and guitar parts, arranged so that either chordal instrument could accompany a vocalist. As one would expect from such a primary source, the roster of artists featured is a virtual Who's Who of Chicago blues.
